Full-Time Faculty, History (Open Rank) and Humanities Internship Director

Summary:
The Open Rank Faculty Member and Internship Director is a 10-month full-time faculty position in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) with administrative responsibilities for the English and History Internship Programs. Faculty responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching, course development, student advising and mentoring, service to the school, department, and university, and continued scholarship in the field. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, student recruitment, retention, and placement efforts; program assessment; and engagement in the life of the university. Internship Director responsibilities include supporting students in the English and History programs as they seek, secure, and complete internships. This position cultivates and manages relationships with and provides support to internship employers, serves as the primary liaison between the Career Connection Center and the English and History programs, and, working with the departmental course coordinators, oversees the assessment of the English and History Internship Programs. This position includes one course release (3 contact hours) per semester, which is awarded in recognition of the administrative responsibilities of the position. The position fulfills all responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as defined in the Stevenson University Policies and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Full-Time Faculty Job Description. Rank and title are determined at the time of hiring and will be commensurate with education and experience.

Education/Experience:
Doctorate degree in history or a related field plus two years of college teaching experience with experience as a public historian, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Postdoctoral experience and a strong commitment to quality teaching with undergraduate students preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, keyboarding, and repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Position requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time and the ability to speak clearly and effectively for an extended period of time. Position requires additional hours for meetings and events, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Essential Functions:
ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIVITY
  • Coordinate with the Chair of English, History, and Humanities to identify students eligible for senior capstone internships, provide information sessions for eligible students, and manage communications regarding the placement process.
  • Work with senior-level students in the English and History programs to identify and secure capstone internship placements. Internships take place in fall, spring, and summer terms. Support students in the English and History programs in seeking relevant internships, including providing guidance in searching for internships, developing appropriate application materials, and communicating appropriately with potential employers.
  • Maintain and grow a database of current, past, and developing professional contacts for the purposes of student placements.
  • Manage the assessment of internship experiences and student outcomes using the required software platform; provide reports to course faculty, Academic Program Administrators, and the Dean, as requested.
  • Ensure the quality of internship employers and experiences through a regular schedule of site visits, student feedback, and assessment.
  • Promote internship opportunities to students and prospective students and families through various means, including social media and email.
  • Serve as the liaison between the Career Connection Center and English, History, and Humanities..
  • Collaborate with the Chair of English, History, and Humanities and the Career Connection Center to identify and develop internship opportunities for students.
  • In consultation with relevant faculty and staff, annually review and revise the college catalog(s) as requested.



INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITY
  • Teach the English, History, and Humanities internship capstone course and additional courses in field of discipline as assigned; teaching load is commensurate with rank and includes a 6 contact-hour release per year.
  • Teach survey courses and upper-division History courses in US History.
  • Teach a minimum of two courses from the following list of history electives: History of Baltimore, History of Maryland, topics in the history of medicine, topics in the history of law and criminal justice, History as Storytelling, topics in US military history, Womens History, History of the Family, History in Popular Culture, African American History, Protest in US History, US History through the Asian Experience, US History as Immigration.
  • Engage students in the practice of history through both classroom and non-classroom activities.
  • Maintain teaching effectiveness by encouraging active student learning, reflecting and responding to student evaluations of teaching, and adjusting teaching strategies per recommendations from classroom observations, Faculty Mentoring and Evaluation Committee (FMEC), and supervisor evaluations.
  • Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to, time spent in classroom, or online courses and in immediate preparation for them; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; preparing and regularly updating teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies; preparing assignments, grading students work, and providing feedback to students in a timely manner. Note that all Stevenson University courses require faculty to use the BlackBoard Course Management System, which includes keeping the gradebook up to date.
  • Other responsibilities include writing and/or updating syllabi each semester or term; reading and responding to emails; grading course work in timely fashion; submitting mid-term and final grades, attendance verification, academic alerts, and other reports as requested; and alerting appropriate university personnel to student concerns on a timely basis.
  • Provide feedback to students via assignments, exams, and other forms of learning assessment in a timely manner.
  • Hold office hours (minimum of 3 hours per week).
  • Conduct student advising activities including time spent providing students with support, resources, and/or recommendations regarding academic, curricular, career and/or graduate school matters.
  • Attend meetings and/or workshops related to instruction (e.g., teaching methods, assessment).
  • Implement new teaching methods in existing courses (includes incorporating evidence-based practice).
  • Mentor students in research courses and/or projects related to specialty scholars program requirements.
  • Conceive and develop new courses to expand academic offerings in field as requested.
  • Participate in general curriculum development, assessment, and other departmental, SHSS, and University activities.
  • Evaluate, update, and revise courses regularly and/or as requested.
  • Serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public.

SERVICE
  • Offer quality advising services to students, including providing recommendations and resources to students on academic, co-curricular, career, and/or graduate school matters.
  • Department service includes contributing to student recruitment, retention, and registration efforts; attending departmental meetings; participating in Open Houses and recruiting efforts; attending and participating in planning and coordination of departmental events; and establishing industry relationships to generate internship and full-time placement opportunities for students.
  • Engage in pursuing grants related to program-community partnerships in history.
  • University service includes, but is not limited to, service on the University, School, and Departmental committees.
  • Engage and participate in the life and work of the academic department, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Stevenson University.
  • Participate in Department, School, and University assessment activities, including, but not limited to, annual assessment of courses and periodic assessments of programs for University and/or accreditation purposes.
  • Mentor and advise new faculty.
  • Serve on Faculty Mentoring and Evaluation Committee(s) as requested.
  • Participate in faculty governance.
  • Mentor students (e.g., club moderator, mentoring programs - distinguished from guiding research or academic pursuits)
  • Actively participate on Department, School, and University committees.
  • Participate in recruitment and yield events.
  • Participate in ongoing departmental activities, such as curriculum development and assessment.
  • Attend all convocations, including convocation and commencement exercises.
  • Attend all University Faculty, Faculty/Staff, and relevant academic Department/School meetings.

SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY
  • Maintain scholarly activities that engage students and contribute to the profession through publications or presentations.
  • Attend professional conferences, workshops, or meetings to maintain currency in area of academic interest.
  • Pursue internal and external funding to support scholarly activity.
  • Complete trainings and other professional development as assigned.
