Job Description:

The Amherst College Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) seeks an experienced and thoughtful educational developer who is committed to equity-minded practices. We invite applications to join our small, dedicated, and passionate team. Our goal is to support our increasingly diverse Amherst College community – faculty, students, and staff – in having equitable access to success in the classroom and feeling genuinely valued in our community. The work of the CTL is primarily faculty-facing, but directly impacts and increasingly involves students, and we do our work in collaboration with staff across the College. Given that Amherst College has one of the most diverse student bodies amongst liberal arts colleges across the country and our students have broad reaching impacts on their communities and our world, we are committed to making progress in being an anti-racist department on campus and supporting student, faculty, and staff initiatives for building an equitable and inclusive learning environment.

The associate director is a full-time, year-round position, with a job group and level of RI-4. Reporting to the director of the CTL, the associate director will work on initiatives and programming focused on humanities, including the arts, and the qualitative social sciences. The associate director contributes to program development, assessment, and administration of a well-supported and growing educational development program. The individual in this role should be engaged with colleagues at local, regional, and national levels to promote excellence in education at Amherst.

Applicants who meet the preferred qualifications are eligible for starting at the associate director level while applicants who meet the required qualifications and have demonstrated commitment to growth in an educational development career will be eligible for starting at the assistant director level. Key Responsibilities

Pedagogical design consultations

  • Serve as a resource for faculty, instructors, and other campus colleagues for a variety of teaching and learning needs, especially those focused on humanities and qualitative social sciences. This work may include advising on the development of innovative assignments, activities, instructional and assessment approaches, as well as syllabi and curricular improvement.

  • Facilitate faculty and staff learning communities and workshops on pedagogical methods and effective practices in a variety of focus areas such as inclusive pedagogies, meaningful learning assessment, active and engaged learning, emerging and innovative pedagogical frameworks, etc.

Collaborative projects on course and curricular design

  • Develop and support programming that contributes to an inclusive, equity-minded learning environment

  • Collaborate with the CTL team and other campus partners to develop, sustain, support and assess educational development initiatives, especially those focused on the humanities and qualitative social sciences.

Operational support

  • Work with the CTL team on building key relationships across campus

  • Work with the CTL team to develop, manage, and maintain newsletters, websites, and social media that will help us share information about teaching at Amherst College

Scholarly Development

  • Stay up-to-date with research, innovations, and emerging frameworks in teaching and learning, specifically those most relevant to residential liberal arts educational contexts

  • Engage in regional, national, and international dialogues on teaching and learning through conference presentations and publications



  • Master's degree in a humanities or social science discipline

  • Demonstrated use of humanities-based, creative, or other qualitative research methodology in their work

  • Two years of college-level teaching, with at least one year in a humanities or social science discipline

  • One year of providing pedagogical support for faculty and instructional staff

  • Knowledge of theories, practice, and research related to teaching and learning in humanities and qualitative social science disciplines at the college level

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative by showing leadership in key areas of responsibility

  • Superior verbal and written communication, time management, and organizational skills, with excellent attention to detail.

  • Superior collaboration skills, including the ability to work within a team to identify opportunities, present ideas, and receive and provide constructive feedback

  • Knowledge of assessment methods, especially relevant to humanities and qualitative social science disciplines in a small liberal arts institution

  • Proven training skills, including the ability to manage conflict, support fellow team members, facilitate a motivated and positive approach to tasks and problems, take and share responsibility, and generate action items for self and others

  • A deep commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, anti-racist educational development program, which may be demonstrated through engagement with and application of innovative, inclusive pedagogies in the individual's own teaching, research or pedagogical development work


  • Ph.D. in a humanities or social science discipline

  • Two to five years of college-level teaching experience in humanities or social science education

  • Experience working in a center for teaching and learning or other pedagogical support environment

  • Experience in qualitative data analysis
